I don’t know what you remember from your past jobs. What I remember from my past working experiences are mostly people. No matter in what business you are, you are in Person-to-Person business. In order to be successful and fulfilled it’s not most important to understand business. You have to understand people.
Discussing something as intangible as people, is always a matter of opinions. But it is also the only topic that can make a full room of managers cry.
People who know me, could say that I am quite demanding manager, or as one of my partners likes to call me, pitbull. 😊 Among employees and partners I would probably never win Miss kindness or Miss popularity contest. But still I am happy to say that I was a leader of a team with highest Net Promoter Score inside the company that was achieving better results than the best employers in the world.
I think being a leader doesn’t require from you to be perfect or some kind of superhuman. But as a leaders you have the responsibility to recognize your superpowers and use them. This blog is about the superpowers we possess in business(&)life, towards employees and all people.
Being a leader, it is almost impossible to imagine how different humans with different life view, business perspectives, different fears, hopes and feelings can work together. But it is true – no matter how different we are, some things we all have in common: we all have a dream, we are all trying to protect something, we are in habit of doing something good or bad. We all need a helping hand every now and then. And we all want to do well.
Now, as a leader your job is to create environment where your people will be safe and have interest to row in the same direction. To do this, you don’t need to be a superhuman. You have the right to have good as well as bad days. You are allowed to have your own fears, doubts, hope. But whatever you are facing, you have tools to use in order to lead as a true leader.
I want to point out 3 superpowers that we all have. In Business(&)Life.
1. Superpower of recognition
People will never forget how you made them feel. I believe that this is number one reason why people are changing companies (& relationships) and are not able to grow inside one. To understand importance of recognition we need to understand power of rejections.
2. Superpower of respect
The Power of respect means not to disrespect. Respect efforts, respect different views, different roles and most importantly – listen. The problem of communication is illusion that it has occured. Good communication always starts with us! We often talk in companies about products, services, numbers. How about the quality of our relationships, the quality of our communication and the quality of our promises to each other?
3. Superpower of appreciation
Believe me, appreciation is better than recognition. No matter how strong a person is, they have a weak point and sometimes all they need is a HUG.
Recognition, respect and appreciation are amazing tools you can always use while being in the shoes of a leader, or a human. My experience is that these secret powers motivate people to the point of being more productive, creative and fulfilled. As a result your business (&life) is using more of its potentials and raising the bars higher day by day.
When investing in your business, products, services, the investment always costs you resources but may or may not pay off. While investment into people sometimes doesn’t require any resources, but always brings long term results. One way or another. Therefore, if you want your business to be successful, do not underestimate the power of successful relationships with your employees and partners.
